Spotlight: From Hong Kong Fires to Building Safety Concerns, What Role Do Automated Systems Play?
November 28, 2025
A Level 5 fire broke out at Hong Kong’s Tai Po public housing estate, Wang Fuk Court, on Wednesday (November 26). The estate comprises eight 31-story buildings undergoing major renovation works. Seven buildings were engulfed by flames, with multiple units destroyed. The blaze has claimed at least 75 lives and injured 76 people, including one firefighter who died in the line of duty. Casualty figures are expected to rise.
This marks the first Level 5 fire in 17 years and the second since Hong Kong’s 1997 handover. It stands as the most severe high-rise building fire in Hong Kong’s history.
Meanwhile, numerous housing estates across Hong Kong are undergoing similar large-scale renovations. The Hong Kong government stated it has immediately arranged inspections of estates undergoing maintenance to review the safety of scaffolding and construction materials.
The following table details the specific applications and advantages of various automation systems in building safety.
| System Category | Core Functionality | Specific Applications | Technical Support | Value and Advantages |
| Fire Early Warning and Detection | Automatically detects fires and triggers alarms | The Fire Services Department has implemented an “IoT Fire Detection System” in low-rise buildings, capable of detecting fires within approximately 60 seconds and automatically transmitting signals to the Fire Communications Center. | Wireless composite fire detectors, 4G LoRa connectivity, central monitoring platform. | Highly accurate and reliable, significantly reducing false alarms; no annual inspections required, with real-time system status monitoring; lower engineering costs compared to traditional systems |
| Intelligent Management of Fire Protection Facilities | Real-time Monitoring of Fire Protection System Status | The smart fire protection system monitors indoor fire hydrants, sprinkler systems, smoke detectors, and outdoor IoT-enabled fire hydrants. It enables rapid location and maintenance when anomalies occur. | IoT sensors and data acquisition platform | Transitioning from reactive repairs to preventive maintenance; enhancing fire rescue efficiency and ensuring reliable water supply |
| Integrated Building Security Management | Centralized Management of Building Systems | The Smart Building Visualization Management Integration System enables unified monitoring of electricity, gas, elevator operations, water leakage risks, and more, while enabling remote control (e.g., smart lighting). | IoT, Cloud Platform, Big Data Analytics, Reserved API Interfaces | Unified platform for collaborative management; extends equipment lifespan and reduces energy consumption; achieves objectives of “lowering labor costs,” “reducing operational energy consumption,” and “ensuring operational quality.” |
| Intelligent Evacuation and Escape | Dynamic Planning for Optimal Escape Routes | The intelligent fire emergency system dynamically adjusts the direction of escape signage based on the fire origin and smoke propagation, guiding occupants to safety | Smart sensors, property management systems, dynamic escape signage | Transforming “static instructions” into “dynamic guidance” prevents people from fleeing toward hazardous areas, significantly enhancing evacuation efficiency and reducing casualties |
In light of this major fire incident, automation systems may undergo deeper transformations to safeguard lives worldwide.
Having worked in automation for many years, we recognize that numerous brands also specialize in building safety systems, such as Honeywell, Siemens, Schneider Electric, and ABB.
Thus, automation systems are not only essential in industrial settings but also ubiquitous in everyday life. Their safe, efficient, and responsive technologies provide a stable, high-performance safety environment for the entire ecosystem.
