Are domestically produced automation products in China a challenge or an opportunity? Do they hold advantages over their European and American counterparts?
December 19, 2025
Whether traders or end-users, it seems everyone remains cautious about domestically developed and manufactured automation products. Yet, the stubbornly persistent Chinese have forged their own market for automation products. Industrial shifts and technological breakthroughs over the past two years have propelled China’s industrial automation sector from market follower to global competitor. Notably, Inovance’s servo systems now hold a 32% market share, while its SCARA robots have claimed the top spot in China for three consecutive years—signaling that Chinese automation enterprises are evolving from technology chasers to rule-makers. On the production lines of Chinese automotive manufacturing plants, bright orange domestic robotic arms execute welding, painting, and assembly tasks with precision. Their control accuracy reaches ±0.02 millimeters, and their dynamic response speed even surpasses that of some internationally renowned brands’ products of the same specifications. Deep in the Gobi Desert of Ningxia, wind farms equipped with controllers developed entirely on domestic chips operate reliably. Compared to imported equipment, these systems demonstrate a 5% increase in power generation and exhibit superior reliability in harsh environments.
Although China’s automation products have achievedbreakthroughs in both product transformation and production technology—with some domestically produced automation products now rivaling international brands and even surpassing Western giants in certain areas—their application domains still lag slightly behind international counterparts. For instance, ABB and Honeywell dominate the DCS system market. Therefore, challenges persist for China’s automation products, with high-end bottlenecks and ecosystem shortcomings being particularly evident. Core technologies such as motion control algorithms, precision reducers, and high-accuracy sensors still lag behind international giants.
Take humanoid robots as an example: each unit costs hundreds of thousands of yuan, with imported core components still accounting for over 40% of the total, severely limiting large-scale adoption.
Unified regulations for data privacy and security evaluations remain absent, hindering interoperability between different brands and exacerbating ecosystem fragmentation.
At the market level, homogenized competition intensifies industry “involution,” with domestic manufacturers crowding the mid-to-low-end market. Price wars have led to widespread “increased volume but not revenue” phenomena.
Structural imbalances in R&D investment warrant attention. While leading enterprises maintain high R&D intensity, the industry’s average profit margin dropped to 8.5% in 2024. Some companies allocate less than 5% of revenue to R&D, risking long-term “low-end lock-in.”
Despite these shortcomings, domestic brands remain competitive against European and American counterparts. Looking ahead, we must anticipate a broader In terms of market responsiveness, Chinese companies are closer to local needs and can rapidly iterate products.
Hu Xiao, Senior Vice President of Schneider Electric, candidly stated: “In China, speed can sometimes be more critical than anything else. Launching a product a year late might mean missing an entire generation.” Chinese companies possess a natural advantage in this regard.
In cost control, domestic automation products typically offer higher cost-effectiveness. Innocean Technology’s integrated “PLC+HMI+Servo+Robot” solution has become a key driver for equipment upgrades in industries like 3C electronics and automotive manufacturing.
For customized services, Chinese companies offer more flexible solutions. Daoli Zhiyuan’s domestically developed controller, based on Loongson chips and optimized for industrial scenarios, boasts superior anti-interference capabilities. Its localized technical team can also respond swiftly to demands.
In contrast, European and American brands like Bosch Rexroth emphasize “plug-and-play functionality, efficiency, and forward-thinking” in their integrated solutions, maintaining advantages in system integration and long-term stability.
As artificial intelligence, 5G, and industrial internet technologies accelerate their convergence, China’s automation industry is embracing new development opportunities. The intelligent manufacturing large model unveiled at the 2025 National Industrial Software Conference enables AI to interpret industrial language, precisely regulate the entire production process, and achieve a transformation from “conversational capability” to “executional capability.”
Chinese Association of Automation, noted: “Automation is no longer confined to enhancing efficiency in isolated processes; it has become the core engine driving manufacturing from quantitative change to qualitative transformation.”
