How to Truly Understand GE I/O Pack Modules
April 23, 2026
GE I/O Pack serves as an intelligent, distributed I/O interface unit within the GE Mark VI/VIe Speedtronic system. Its primary function is to act as a signal bridge between the controller and field devices, handling signal acquisition, conditioning, isolation, and the execution of output commands. Communicating with the controller via high-speed Ethernet, it ensures the system’s determinism and reliability within demanding industrial environments.
The GE I/O Pack constitutes a complete I/O module—comprising an intelligent I/O station equipped with a local processor, a terminal board, and field wiring—which is installed within the control cabinet. The entire system architecture can be broadly categorized into three distinct layers
First is the Control Layer: Centered primarily around the controller, this layer governs computational decision-making, redundancy synchronization, and overall system management.
Second is the Communication Layer: Utilizing the IONet Ethernet protocol at a speed of 100 Mb/s, this layer facilitates high-speed, deterministic communication and supports single, dual, or triple redundancy configurations.
Third is the Field Layer: Comprising the I/O Pack, terminal boards, and field devices, this layer performs signal acquisition and output, provides electrical isolation, and ensures the localized protection and proper operation of the entire field system.
So, what is the operational workflow of the I/O Pack?
Field sensors and switches transmit signals to the I/O Pack via the terminal board. These signals undergo filtering, isolation, and analog-to-digital conversion to be processed as Analog Inputs (AI) or Digital Inputs (DI). Subsequently, the CPU embedded within the Pack independently executes algorithms, performs self-diagnostics, and conducts fault detection. It then interacts with the controller via IONet to upload acquired data and receive control commands. Finally, these commands are converted—via digital-to-analog conversion within the Pack—into Digital Outputs (DO) or Analog Outputs (AO) to drive field actuators and execute the required actions.
