On-site application cases of thermal power plants
Case Background: This coastal combined-cycle power plant operates in an environment characterized by high temperatures, high humidity, and salt mist, in addition to experiencing significant levels of vibration.
The plant houses two 9E gas turbines, two heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs), and one condensing steam turbine, configured in a "one-on-one" combined-cycle arrangement. The facility utilizes the GE Speedtronic Mark V control system.
Commissioned in 2003, the plant operates on a two-shift basis for peak-load regulation, undergoing 150 to 200 start-stop cycles annually.
The GE DS200SSBAG1A board is an integral component of the DC300 drive subsystem within the Mark V turbine control system. Its primary function is to control the excitation windings of the gas turbine's exciter. The board's main role is to absorb voltage spikes generated during the switching of IGBTs and thyristors within the DC drive circuit, thereby suppressing surges and protecting power semiconductor devices to effectively reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI).
After 8 to 12 years of operation, the DS200SSBAG1A board becomes prone to frequent failures—manifesting as alarms for overvoltage or voltage spikes within the excitation system, anomalies in fuel valve drive operation, and EMI-related disturbances. How can the occurrence of such faults be avoided or minimized? The most direct approach is the periodic replacement of spare parts. However, for the sake of long-term operational stability, a more robust strategy involves upgrading the specifications of the snubber board's capacitors, as well as enhancing heat dissipation and vibration isolation measures.
